A root canal treats infection inside the tooth. When decay or a crack reaches the pulp — the nerve and blood supply at the centre — the tissue becomes inflamed or infected, and that is what produces severe, throbbing toothache. Root canal treatment removes the infected pulp, disinfects and shapes the canals, and seals them.
The purpose is simple: to keep your natural tooth. No implant or bridge functions quite as well as the tooth you were born with, and a properly treated root-canal tooth can last decades.

No stage of your treatment should be a surprise. This is the sequence from first appointment to finish.

Diagnosis
Clinical tests and an X-ray confirm which tooth is involved and whether the pulp is genuinely affected. Not every painful tooth needs a root canal, and we check before recommending one.

Anaesthesia
The tooth and surrounding area are fully numbed. You should feel pressure, but not pain. Tell us if you feel anything sharp — we top up rather than push through.

Isolation
A rubber dam isolates the tooth, keeping saliva out of the canals. This step matters more for long-term success than most patients realise.

Cleaning and shaping
The infected pulp is removed and the canals are cleaned, disinfected and shaped with rotary instruments, working to the measured length of each root.

Filling and sealing
The canals are filled with an inert material and sealed so bacteria cannot re-enter.

Crown
A root-treated back tooth is brittle and needs a crown to protect it from fracture. Skipping this step is the most common reason a successful root canal fails later.

The honest version: We recommend extraction when a tooth genuinely cannot be restored — a split root, or too little structure left to hold a crown. If it can be saved, saving it is almost always the better decision.

The procedure itself is not — the tooth is fully anaesthetised, and most patients are surprised by how uneventful it is. The pain people associate with root canals is the infection beforehand. That is what the treatment removes. Mild tenderness for a few days afterwards is normal and manageable with ordinary painkillers.
