I have severe toothache. What helps until I can be seen?

Take the painkiller you normally tolerate, at the normal dose. A cold compress on the outside of the cheek helps swelling. Do not put aspirin directly on the gum — it burns the tissue. Do not apply heat to a swelling. Call us and get seen.

Is facial swelling an emergency?

Yes. Swelling means the infection has spread beyond the tooth. If it is spreading towards the eye, or you have difficulty swallowing, breathing or opening your mouth, that needs immediate attention — go to a hospital emergency department if you cannot reach us.

Can I just take antibiotics?

They may reduce the swelling temporarily, but they do not cure a dental infection — the source inside the tooth remains, and the problem returns, often worse. Antibiotics buy time to get treatment; they are not the treatment.

Relieve the pain

Drainage, opening the tooth to release pressure, dressing, or a temporary restoration — whichever addresses the actual cause.

Control infection

Antibiotics where genuinely indicated. Antibiotics alone do not cure a dental infection — the source has to be treated, and we will explain that rather than simply prescribing.

Definitive treatment

Once comfortable, we plan the permanent fix — usually root canal treatment, a restoration or an extraction.
