Do all wisdom teeth need to come out?

No. A wisdom tooth that has erupted straight, has an opposing tooth to bite against, and can be cleaned properly should be kept. Removal is for teeth that are impacted, repeatedly infected, decayed, or damaging the molar in front.

How long is the recovery?

Most people are comfortable within two to three days and back to normal within a week. Soft food, no smoking, no rinsing hard for the first 24 hours, and no straws — these matter, because dislodging the clot causes a painful dry socket.

Can both sides be done at once?

Yes, and many patients prefer it — one recovery period instead of two. If chewing comfort during recovery is a priority, doing one side at a time is the alternative. It is your call.

Wisdom teeth are the last molars to erupt, usually between 17 and 25. By then there is often not enough room left in the jaw, and the tooth becomes impacted — stuck at an angle against the tooth in front, or trapped partly under the gum.

A partly erupted wisdom tooth is difficult to clean and easy to infect, which causes the swelling and severe pain most people associate with them. It can also decay the healthy molar it is pressed against.

Not every wisdom tooth needs removing. One that has erupted fully, sits in a normal position and can be cleaned is best left alone. We take an X-ray and give you a straight answer either way.
