Plaque that is not removed within a day or two hardens into calculus — tartar — which brushing cannot shift. It has to be removed with instruments, and that is what scaling does.
Polishing follows, removing surface stain from tea, coffee and tobacco, and leaving the enamel smooth so new plaque adheres less readily.
This is the least glamorous appointment in dentistry and by some distance the most valuable. Consistent six-monthly cleaning prevents most of the expensive problems that bring people in later.

No. This is the most common misconception in dentistry. Scaling removes hardened deposits from the tooth surface; it does not remove enamel. Teeth may feel different afterwards because the tartar is gone, and small gaps can appear where inflamed gum has shrunk back to a healthy size — both indicate improvement.
